Factor XPTO: With over 160 years of wine production in the Douro, the Cálem family makes unique wines of superior quality.

Our family has been producing wine in the Douro for over 160 years. For four generations we were been making Porto Wine at A. A. Cálem & Filho, Lda. Unfortunately, it was sold in 1997. The family tradition continues with José Maria Cálem, from the fifth generation, and his son Duarte, from the sixth generation.
The company’s vineyards, winery and main house are located in Vilarinho de Cotas, in the municipality of Alijó. It is five kilometres from Pinhão, considered the heart of the Douro, where it all began. Characterized mainly by small plots, the result of the division of the property over many generations, it is dominated by old vines.
The vineyards in Vilarinho de Cotas are marked by their age (50 to 70 years), which is explained by the difficulty and cost of replanting the rubble.
The vines are planted on narrow terraces, here called “combros”, supported by walls of schist stone. Their production is limited, due to the fact that there are small amounts of sap circulating, though they produce very refined and concentrated wines. Their diversity contributes to their aromatic and flavour’s richness. However, as we know, small productions are the best guarantee of high quality. All production is carried out organically.
