Factor XPTO: Wines made in colab with nature

Bodega Frontio is about being in love with wine, being thirsty and living out a dream of making wine! In 2016 Thyge quit his day job in Copenhagen and bought vineyards with vines between 10 – 100 years in the very rural part of Spain in the Arribes, with the aim of establishing his own winery.

The Arribes has a long tradition of winemaking, but due to old vines and low yield and bad accessibility, many vineyards have been abandoned and traditions lost. But there is a hidden gem in the local grape variety Juan García, which is a non-typical Spanish grape as its very thin-skinned and low in alcohol. Other varieties have been rediscovered, among others Puesta en Cruz, Bastardillo chico, Tinto Jeromo and Gajo Arroba and we are planting those varieties.

Chus: ”We are working around 12 hectares of both young and old vineyards and annual production of around 25.000 bottles. The vineyards are worked natural (certified organic by CCL) by re-establishing the hummus via cover crops, compost and leaving the manually cut-off branches crushed in the vineyard and we only spray with sulfites extracted from minerals. The handpicked grapes go through very hard manual selection, whole clusters fermentation and only pump-overs, no punch down to have a very light extraction. In addition, we are planting our own forest in Fermoselle so for every 6 bottles we sell we plant 1 tree in the forest.”
