XPTO Factor: Freshness and Acidity, between the Sea, the Lagoon, and the Mountain.

Quinta da Várzea da Pedra is located in Bombarral, between the Atlantic Ocean and the Montejunto Mountain range, within one of the nine Denominations of Origin in the Lisbon wine region — DOC Óbidos.

This denomination has a long history of wine production, referenced for its “fine wines” since the founding of Portugal. It benefits from a unique microclimate shaped by the Atlantic Ocean, the geological heritage of the Óbidos Lagoon, and the weather influence of the Montejunto Mountains.

Our wines are infused with maritime influence due to the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, further enhanced by the prevailing northwesterly sea breeze and the fog rolling in from the Óbidos Lagoon. The Montejunto Mountains (15 km to the east) reduce annual sunlight hours, cool our summers, and make our winters colder, promoting the formation of morning frost in the vineyards. This combination brings freshness and salinity to the wines, along with a vibrant and flavorful acidity that ensures their great aging potential.

We cultivate 14.5 hectares of vineyards (90% white grapes), where we employ artisanal practices and organic treatments, avoiding herbicides to maintain balanced yields per hectare, focusing on quality. Our oldest vines date back to 1948, while the youngest were planted in 2020. Grapes are hand-picked from the best areas of each vineyard.

Our winemaking is pure, relying on our indigenous yeasts. The high acidity and low pH of our grapes help us minimize the use of sulfites, allowing us to craft wines we love that reflect our exceptional location and the true essence of our grapes.
