Viúva Gomes is dedicated to highlighting the small terroirs within the Colares wine region.
We believe in authentic wines, deeply connected to the land that surrounds us, preserving and showcasing the integrity of each location.
Our goal is to individualise and protect the characteristics and uniqueness of the Colares Denomination of Origin (DO). The grapes for DO Colares grow in sandy soils, from ungrafted vines, primarily featuring Malvasia de Colares (white) and Ramisco (red). We also aim to demonstrate the potential of other locations within the region that do not meet DO requirements, all from the perspective of recognising each site’s intrinsic value through differentiation, not hierarchy.
In the three parishes eligible for producing DO Colares wines—Colares, São Martinho, and São João das Lampas—there is notable climatic, geological, and topographical variability, deserving of study and appreciation. These variations make each wine unique, with characteristics intrinsically tied to the terroir of each location.
We believe that the future is built on the past. Thus, we aim to honour the long journey that has brought us to the present day. However, we remain open to knowledge and exploration, as these help us shape the evolution we envision for Viúva Gomes and the future of Colares.
