Swick Wines is owned and operated by Joe Swick and located in the Chehalem Mountains of the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Joe sources organically farmed grapes from several high elevation/colder vineyards in Oregon and Washington State. The vineyards in Oregon are suited to cooler climate grapes, such as Pinot Noir and Riesling.
In Washington State the vineyards are higher in elevation than Oregon and receive more daytime sunlight with higher temperatures. A dry climate with lots of wind keeps oidium and botrytis issues to a minimum. These vineyards are planted to grapes such Grenache Noir, Grenache Blanc, Mourvèdre, Syrah…. Also a bit of Touriga Nacional, Verdelho and Tinta Miúda!
Joe began working harvests in 2003 in his native Oregon before traveling the globe for almost a decade to further his education in winemaking. In 2013 he returned home to Oregon and created Swick Wines.
In the cellar, Joe does not inoculate any ferments. He ages his wines in older 500 and 600 liters oak barrels and also some concrete eggs.
A small quantity of sulfur at bottling is the only addition to Swick wines. The goal is to make the purest expressions of the PNW (Pacific North West) while keeping the wine tasting like WINE (and not kombucha).
Joe makes a lot of different wines: “chillable reds” as “Shill-ah-blay”, ” Foryer Za ” a Sangiovese aimed to be the perfect pizza pairing, “The Natch,” sourced entirely from the Naches Heights; “Ellaguru,” a super savory combination of Melon de Bourgogne from Oregon and Counoise from Washington.
