We invite you to discover the captivating story of the Schatz family. Originating from Sütdtirol, in northern Italia, this family has been dedicated to viticulture since 1641. At just 18 years old, Friedrich Schatz, known as Federico, decided to continue the family tradition but in a region with a better climate.
In 1982, Federico embarked on a journey that led him to Ronda, a place where the Mediterranean and the Atlantic meet, in the heart of Andalusia. Here, in the historic Serranía de Ronda, where ancient Iberians and Romans once cultivated vineyards, Federico found his home: Finca Sanguijuela. This place, with its peculiar name and full of significant coincidences, became the epicentre of his dream.
Learning the language was the first step, and thanks to an intensive course in Marbella and daily practice with local bricklayers, Federico soon mastered Spanish with a perfect Andalusian accent. His goal was clear: to create a family vineyard and winery where high-quality, organic, biodynamic wines could be produced.
Despite the initial challenges, perseverance and hard work paid off. Finca Sanguijuela became a benchmark, and together with other wineries and the support of the Regulatory Council, it helped to put Ronda on the map for quality viticulture.
Thirty years later, the Schatz family continues to grow, and the new generation joins the legacy of wisdom and tradition passed down by their grandparents. With nature’s immense generosity and a deep love for the land, they continue to produce unique wines that are full of life and energy.
