Located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, on Pico Island, the Cooperativa Vitivinícola da Ilha do Pico – Picowines CRL, founded in 1949, brings together most of the island’s producers, to produce wine with a terroir impossible to find elsewhere in the world. We are currently a family of around 280 members who, every year, sell us all the raw material, with the best quality, for the production of our wines.

Our wines are unique due to the extreme maritime climate and the unique landscape of the vineyards, the latter considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004. The fact that we are a volcanic island, built through lava and rock, and the persistence of the people in transforming that same lava in the vineyards, constitutes a large part of our identity and the identity of our wines. The combination of these two phenomena makes the soil and climate transmit special and unique characteristics to all wines.

“Making wine in the Azores is a privilege for any winemaker. Not only because the grapes and wines are of great quality and unique, but also because of the responsibility that was given to me, to continue the work of the 280 producers who produce the grapes. It is my duty to respect the incredible terroir and make sure that it is tasted in every bottle of wine we produce.” – Bernardo Cabral, consultant winemaker at the Pico Island Winery Cooperative.
